How Sunshine & Rainbows Came To Be

By Ginny Ross (Director 1980-2008)

Sunshine and Rainbows was happily born in September of 1980. I had 4 children, aged 6 years and under, and certainly it was not the time to open a business. However I was enthusiastic and ready for the challenge.

At the time there were very few educational programs on Cape Cod, yet many families looking for programs.  I met the requirements for licensing from the Office of Children of Boston (revised Early Education and Care) for Ownership/Directorship, and opened Sunshine & Rainbows in the lower hall of the Dennis Union Church. As such, we became an integral part of Dennis Village and in our first year we enrolled 72 children from age 2.9 -6 years.

My philosophy was to allow the children to develop at their own pace. I was committed to celebrate each child for their realistic expectations they demonstrated and not compartmentalize them. Of course, coupled with that, Sunshine and Rainbows was a place for each child to feel loved, have oodles of fun, and be recognized as the beautiful little people they were born to be.

Sunshine & Rainbows created a strong field trip program early on, which was filled with delightful journeys that we all explored together.  Our school enjoyed supportive parents who helped transport our little ones as we left no rock unturned. At our school all holidays were joyously embraced. I am forever grateful for the most patient, savvy, kind and caring teachers who taught beside me and awakened me to their genuine qualities of providing the very best days for all children.

Through my 28 years as preschool director, I enjoyed the positive impact of all the parents  and grandparents, who gave so generously and tirelessly of themselves to our school, our teachers and our children.

Absolutely one of the most rewarding and best decisions I made so long ago was to open this school.

I am proud to see that the Sunshine & Rainbows traditions have continued and improved with my daughter Caitie at the helm. She is lovingly continuing to grow Sunshine and Rainbows as a pillar in our local community.
